How good is ZWCAD AutoCAD compatibility in real projects? This guide answers that layer by layer: DWG/DXF versions, LISP and compiled .fas/.vlx files, menus and CUI, command aliases, Xrefs, fonts, plot styles and third-party add-ons (VBA, .NET, ARX). For each one we say what works as-is, what needs a one-time configuration step and what needs rework, based on ZWSOFT’s own migration documentation and our deployment experience (sources at the end). If you are weighing cost rather than compatibility, the per-seat 1–5 year table is on ZWCAD vs AutoCAD: 3-year cost.

Cost in one line: ZWCAD Professional is 33,250,000₫ (≈ US$1,259) once, excl. VAT; AutoCAD is about 39,000,000₫ (≈ US$1,477) per year from Vietnamese Autodesk resellers, VAT included. After three years ZWCAD Professional is about 28% of the AutoCAD cost. Full table and sources: ZWCAD vs AutoCAD.

DWG and DXF version compatibility

ZWCAD opens, creates and saves DWG/DXF natively, with no import or conversion step. ZWSOFT added full DWG/DXF 2018 support in ZWCAD 2018 SP2; Autodesk lists that format (code AC1032) for AutoCAD 2018 through 2024. In practice, drawings move between ZWCAD and AutoCAD in both directions, and you can still save down to older DWG versions for partners on legacy releases.

What breaks in “DWG compatibility” is almost never the file format. It is what the file references: missing fonts, unresolved Xref paths, and proxy objects from AutoCAD’s vertical toolsets. Those are covered below.

LISP compatibility: what runs and what needs fixing

ZWSOFT’s LISP FAQ states that ZWCAD’s LISP interface is designed to be consistent with AutoCAD, so most existing routines run unchanged, and LISP works in every edition, including Standard. Compiled .fas and .vlx files load directly from ZWCAD 2025 onward. Load routines with APPLOAD or the Startup Suite; for auto-loading, use zwcad.lsp in place of acad.lsp/acaddoc.lsp.

ZWSOFT lists the usual reasons a routine fails:

Our practice: run every company routine once on a copy of a real drawing during the 30-day trial and log failures. For new or rewritten routines, see the ZWCAD automation guide.

Xrefs, templates and sheet sets

Xrefs, layouts, viewports and Sheet Set Manager work as in AutoCAD. AutoCAD .dwt templates open directly, with title blocks, layers, text styles and dimension styles intact. The usual fix is paths: set template, sheet set (.dst) and support search paths in OPTIONS → Files to your company’s standard folders, and send drawings to partners with eTransmit so Xrefs and fonts travel together.

Fonts: SHX, TTF and font mapping

Missing fonts are the number-one cause of text showing as odd characters or question marks. Following ZWSOFT’s guidance, copy .shx and .ttf files from AutoCAD’s Fonts folder (and your shared company font folder) into the Fonts folder of the ZWCAD installation. If you use a font mapping file (.fmp), copy it to the Support folder to keep substitution rules. In multi-seat offices we prefer one shared network font folder added to every seat’s Support File Search Path, instead of copying fonts machine by machine.

Plot styles and printers

Run PLOTTERMANAGER in ZWCAD to open its configuration folder, then copy your .ctb/.stb plot style tables and printer configuration files (.pmp) into it. Then plot a reference set and compare lineweights with AutoCAD output; this is the step teams most often skip and the one users notice first. Once styles match, ZWCAD’s Smart Plot can batch-plot by title block across many files.

Add-ons: VBA, .NET, ARX and vertical toolsets

Architecture/MEP/Plant 3D objectsProxy objectsView and plot, but not edit as native objects

ZWCAD Standard supports LISP only. If you run VBA, .NET or ARX tools, plan on Professional. And if your teams edit intelligent AutoCAD Architecture or MEP objects every day, keep AutoCAD for those seats; many firms run a hybrid with ZWCAD on the bulk of drafting seats.

A compatibility test plan for your trial

  1. Collect 10–20 real drawings: your heaviest files, ones with custom fonts, Xref-heavy sets and any with vertical-toolset objects.
  2. Copy fonts, ZWCAD.pgp, partial CUI, profile and plot styles as described above.
  3. Open, edit, save and reopen each file in ZWCAD, then open the saved file in AutoCAD.
  4. Run every company LISP routine and log failures.
  5. Plot a reference set and compare lineweights.
  6. List VBA/.NET/ARX tools and estimate rework before choosing editions.

ZWCAD AutoCAD compatibility FAQ

Can AutoCAD open drawings saved in ZWCAD? Yes. ZWCAD saves native DWG, and can save to older DWG versions for partners on legacy AutoCAD releases.

Do AutoCAD LISP routines run in ZWCAD Standard? Yes, LISP runs in every edition. Most routines run unmodified; test routines that rely on ActiveX functions or unusual command arguments.

Can ZWCAD load .arx files? No. ARX applications must be recompiled with the ZRX SDK, which requires ZWCAD Professional or MFG.

Will my AutoCAD menus and shortcuts carry over? Yes, with a one-time step: export customizations as a partial CUI and load it in ZWCAD, and rename your acad.pgp to ZWCAD.pgp.

Why does text look wrong when I open an AutoCAD drawing? Almost always a missing SHX font. Copy the fonts into ZWCAD’s Fonts folder or add your shared font folder to the support path.
